It appears there was a feature added in phpBB quite some time ago that better prevented bots from signing up on your forum (visual account activation, wherst a person must type the symbols from an image into the confirmation box, etc), but I didnt ever realize this because it wasn't supported in the SubBlack theme that we use here.

I went ahead and added in the required code so we can use this feature with our theme. We shouldn't see any more bots now hopefully.

If we still get that spam bullshit going on, there are many mods that can be installed to prevent the shit further.

We can try user again, just because I dont think any of us want to manually activate each account.

I think we'll be ok now with the visual activation working.

I duno how they get past those. It must be something in the code of the activation page...like if the image itself is named what the code is, so the bot looks it up in the page source and copies that.

And sortof off topic, phpBB 3x is getting closer to release. It LOOKS real spiffy (SHITLOADS of new options) but I'm wondering how much security will be compromised with so much new shit...they're having trouble with it even now.

no they dl the image and analyze the pixels. then they compare it to known fonts and make an educated guess.

Don't see why it is such a big deal. Deadly asks for people to post more to increase the count, bots are increasing it for us!
