Thought u had a job. It seems like you keep saying this over and over. I'm gonna start calling you Joel.
I guess u can take the kid out of nebraska, but u can't take the nebraska outta the kid. lolol
Contract work. It comes and goes...typically one will pay off bills and such. Pretty much all PHP/web contracts on the internet goes to people who can barely speak english (aka India) so it's not any use trying to get any work outside of the local area...which doesn't have much to go around. For some reason, every business likes to go over to the local shitty ISP that does web sites as well. Horrid sites...shitty service...etc. But this is a pretty conservative part of California and every business owner is super loyal to their business friends. It's hard enough to get ANY job around here because they prefer to hire their own (the people who grew up here).

Thanks for making sure to go out of your way to kick me when I'm down. It's not like I don't already feel like absolute shit that I can barely pay my bills already. Nope...the Vegan from San Francisco is clearly a class act and has to be a prick about it (which you seem to be more and more of as time goes by).
I was joking, sry it bothered u. I hope everything makes a turn for the better for you.

Have u tried to contact the ISP for gigs? It's likely they have more work than they can handle, or they may just throw clients ur way, cause ISPs hate to do any hand-holding, etc.

What are the common industries in ur neck of the woods? (pun intended)
Do you have any other part-time job? Have you thought about prostituting urself as a home computer repair guy? Likely you'll make contacts of ppl who are in business for themselves and they need a website, or need someone to tell them what they need, etc.

No ISP is gonna go to someone's home, so that could be an opportunity.

edit: Again, sry for the joke, it was a lil cold, but I thought u'd laugh at it. my bad.

That's if they release the DLL, they could just compile the whole thing into the exe. I assume the reason for the DLL was to make an sdk possible.

If I was doing an ad-based game, I don't think I'd build a DLL, but they might cause they don't have much programmer time. Altho, even with a DLL I'm still unclear how it would work well (client server and menu options) without the sdk code, unless u adapted the code from the gore sdk.

It's still do-able w/o a dll, but it becomes a much more difficult problem as you'd have to hack the exe.

I probably would have laughed at it if I wasn't completely stressed about the situation. Plus, I kinda thought the Joel analogy was as if I take money from other people...which is something I don't want to ever do. CBF living like that

Yeah I talked to the ISP awhile ago about it and they said they were on top of things. Meanwhile I have a friend who used to work there and talks to people who currently work there and they said that they have too much work and would love to give it out if their management would allow it. So seems to be some management greed and/or unrealistic expectations. They had a web developer spot open like a year and a half ago...I put my resume in and never heard back, so when I asked my friend about it he said that they closed that position and didn't interview it (creating more stress on the current developers who really aren't that good anyways, I think they're about forced to cookie cut every web site) and implied that there is some sort of financial mess there...probably due to bad management.

MOST jobs out here are with the indian casino. They aren't very good employers. They pay below the local average because there aren't that many jobs. I worked with them for awhile until I got a web developer / IT consultant job (which didn't last long because the guy who owns it decided to cut a bunch of jobs to save money and open another location for his coffee shop - which closed soon after - not many good business owners around here I guess?). The casino definitely works in their own world. They make boat loads of money but don't pay very much at all (BARELY above minimum wage) and the annual increase is something around 30 cents/hour. They like to say you move up quickly - but it's not truth in reality, your first and second claims to move (which you can only submit ONCE every 3 months (3 times max/year) AFTER working there 6 months) are always rejected (typically people don't move out of their start job for a year or two - and only into positions that are in constant need like cooks). I was trying to move up into IT, but I didn't know about this until I started in another position (I was a custodian working 10-4's/graveyards - meh!) and everyone was asking me WTF I was thinking given that you don't REALLY move up like it says on those "work here, we're wonderful!" banners :P If an IT position opened up, I'd probably go ahead and apply (since I like the head IT guy) but I know that recently they had an opening and filled it with an indian who has no experience in IT...so it's always an uphill battle with them.

The second largest employer is the hospital. I have yet to see anything in IT-related positions.

I do have my resume in with the county, which has a few ISS jobs open. That looks promising, but you never know with government jobs (which relies on government funding - and they like to hire local "born-n-raised", perhaps so people they hire don't move away after a year or two?). I think that it pays good for the area...ISS Level 1 is 2-2.5k/month and ISS Level 2 is up to 3.2k/month. I think I'll probably at least get an interview.

I'd prefer to pay my bills off before I move ($4k credit card debt due to car problems) ... but duno. Open to anything at this point, as long as I can make enough to live on my own since I wouldn't have anybody trustworthy to rent with unless my brother wanted to move with me.

The home repair guy thing is a good idea IMO. I thought about it a little over a year ago, but I was having a bunch of car problems at the time so I didn't think it'd be reliable enough...but things are fixed now, so I'll put more thought into it. I'll have to see who all is doing that around here. Maybe I'll just do geek squad crap...removing viruses, repairing basic problems, reformatting, etc. I'd prefer to have a laptop to take out with me, but I could always get one down the road. I'll look into that thx

Nah, wasn't even thinking about the taking money stuff, just the struggling part.

I think u could put up some fliers in coffee shops and such.

Like: your computer slow? You don't need a new computer, you just need a good cleaning.

get the MS cdkey first, backup all their data, re-install OS & apps, run msconfig and turn off all the services crap and startup stuff. Will run like a dream. Bring a bunch of software and stuff to get the job done. You wouldn't need a laptop, but u could prolly pick up a used one for $50.

edit: Can you ssh into your server? If so, you can always use an sshApplet on my site from anywhere with java to login:

This is what my host says about it on their site:

"We allow you to use the OpenSSH Protocol (using Jailed Shell) on all of our Shared servers to make it easier to develop and debug your files with such text editors as vim and nano. To request OpenSSH access, please E-Mail support with a copy of your photo ID. (No Daemons or Background processes allowed.)"

Would that work out? I don't know a lot about SSH (I've been meaning to learn about it though) ... and what would your applet do to help me with this stuff?

ssh is pretty simple, and powerful at the same time.

It's just a terminal window, just like you see with Linux, or like a command window in Windows. This is also called a shell, and SSH just stands for Secure Shell. It's an encrypted method for remote login.

If you were logging in from home, you should just install Putty on Windows. Linux has a builtin ssh client.

The applet I gave u a link to, is just a way to login to your server from anywhere, as long as java is available in the browser. You could prolly also put Putty on a thumbdrive and take it with you as well.

For you, it would mostly just allow you to edit the files directly or to maybe run php on the files directly to debug. You can also use SSH to get upload/download files.

Ahhh...so it doesn't have much to do with this computer cleaning stuff, right?

I've had a friend nagging at me for years to get into it...but I just haven't run into any situations where I needed it I guess

I reckon it would be more useful for if you have a dedicated server and can reboot it remotely with SSH, right?

Yea, but it's also handy to have ur server grab files for you. Lots of times, I'll want to download a file so I'll paste a link into the ssh terminal using "wget". It will download the file for me at usually blazingly fast. Then I'll download it from my server and not worry about getting disconnected in the middle and such. You can also run Xwindow applications like Firefox and such thru SSH (as long as you have a X server running on ur computer, Linux obviously has one, but u can install one for Windows too).
