not that this is going to help much, but just from personal experience and products bought from WD, ive always ran into issues and errors of the such with WD.
dunno its wack!
jim's thing might be what it is, my friend today at college said he uses the dual usb cords for his external because its a powerhog.
It might be possible that the usb ports on your PC are weak and you will need a cable like that.
Are the ports USB2.0 ?
What are the specs of your PC?
Include how many drives and PSU wattage.
when you do plug the drive in make sure to go to :
Control panel>administrative tools>Computer management and click Disk Management
So you can be sure whether its being detected at all or not.
Also goto Device manager and make sure EVERYTHING is installed.(no yellow triangles)
